The Rurals were born in 1994 with founding members Andy Compton and Pete Morris taking their name from Compton’s club promotion outfit. Initial releases came on their self-titled imprint as well as their own Idea label under the Green Belt and Rainbow Garden monikers. In 1998, the duo teamed up with vocalist Marie (Tweek), who brought with her bass player Pete Middleton; over the years, saxophonist Charlie Hearnshaw and DJ Onlymatt have joined forces to create the unique Rurals’ sound. In their own label Peng, they have found a label that they can comfortably call home. Since the inception of the UK-based collective, The Rurals have released an impressive anthology of more than fifty EPs and three full-length albums on labels including D.I.Y., Large, Seasons, Viva and of course, Peng. Their unique sonic mesh of broken grooves, sunset melodies and jazzy, subdued house has won them praise from around the globe. Their first contribution to Deepfunk comes as a rework of the Rhythm Slaves’ vocal deep house gem, “Let It Flow.” |
