Based on his background as a DJ, influenced by sounds ranging from hip hop to soul, funk to classic rock, Los Angeles native Chris Douglas launched a production career in 1995 after a whirlwind love affair with an Ensoniq ASR-10 keyboard. As Presto, Chris has been creating jazzy beats for his own Concrete Grooves imprint since 2000. Though still a novice in comparison to the age most industry vets, Presto has already achieved praises from around the globe; Relax Your Mind, off his six-track debut release Breakin Concrete was licensed by the acclaimed Om Records for the third installment of Mark Farina‚s legendary Mushroom Jazz compilation. Another cut, Flying High, will appear in the spoken world film Spit starring Saul Williams. In addition to these accolades, the record received rave reviews in rags like XLR8R and URB. In 2001, Presto collaborated with Jun Shiina to release the compilation, Impressions On Concrete which was followed by another collaborative twelver Calligraphy. Jesse Terry of XLR8R wrote, "Beats by DJ Presto and Mr. French anchor the rhymes, evoking a mix between Mushroom Jazz and Slum Village, the added instrumental tracks are good listening on their own." Presto's My Intro with MC Lowd was featured on URB's Scion promotional CD for Toyota. The jazzy instrumentals and solid hip hop beats of Jazz Juice received heavy play from tastemakers like Farina and L.A. airwave hero Jason Bentley. |
