Citing luck as the companion to their obvious talent, the Seattle-based Lawnchair Generals have avoided a typical formulaic sound, earning much-deserved accolades from the most respected crop of international dance music icons. Carlos Mendoza developed his love for music at an early age, eventually succumbing to house after an early nineties San Francisco rave. His other half, Peter Christianson, studied sound engineering and audio production while building his record collection; he has been DJing for over a decade. The duo met as employees at Seattle’s Platinum Records. Since 2000, they have been in the studio. Their debut came on Jon Lemmon and Johnny Fiasco’s Viva Recordings as The Great Escape, which received much critical acclaim and international play from the likes of Mark Farina, Doc Martin and Rob Mello. This was followed in 2002 by their remix of the Rhythm Slaves’ ‘I Can Feel It’ on Deepfunk and the ‘U Dirty’ EP on Westbound, portions of which have been licensed to compilations from DJ Heather and Hipp-e and Halo. Production aside, the duo agree that first and foremost, they are DJs; Carlos hosts a weekly radio show on Groovetech in addition to their regular club gigs. “We’d like to represent Seattle well, but our interest is global,” agree Carlos and Peter. “We want to see how far we can take the music we’re making; how far the appeal will go.”
