British production prodigy Ged Craughwell, a.k.a. Atomphunk, cites diverse origins of his interest in music, carefully including his birthplace and home of Manchester, England. Nights at the Hacienda with DJs like Mike Pickering and Sasha stand out fondly in his memory. Ged began DJing in 1990 and within a few years, launched Clear, the monthly club night that transformed him into a prominent figure in the Manchester scene. In 1997, he established Filterbank Studios, a venture that led to remix work with the likes of Departure Lounge and Shanks & Bigfoot and original productions released on Toko Records and most recently, Los Angeles-based Deepfunk. Of his time in the studio, Ged says, “Now it all comes as naturally as breathing. Over the years, I’ve moved on from the cut and paste disco to being able to write nice chord changes. I can be quite picky when it comes to finishing a track; it has to be perfect.” His desire to attain perfection is evident within his sonic creations; his fine-tuned house possesses an unmistakable funk and a sleek, distinctive excitement. Ged currently maintains monthly residencies at Startin’ Somethin’ in Manchester and the highly acclaimed Heaven in London. |
